The UN Relief Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, UNRWA, says in a new report that broad unemployment in Gaza in the second half of 2010 reached an unprecedented 45.2%, one of the highest rates in the world. It has been exactly four years since Hamas took over the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to impose even tougher restrictions. With the economic blockade entering its fifth year, many young Gazans are resigned to taking whatever work they can get. According to a UN report, it has created a drastic situation where half of all adults in the Gaza Strip are unemployed. I have just had two weeks off work due to the Lunar New Year, called Tet here in Vietnam. It is the most important holiday in Vietnam and the country pretty much shuts down for a week or two while everyone goes home to visit with their families. In the weeks leading up to Tet, this year it was on the 7th of February on our calender they decorate the city and everyone gets bonuses at work. It is also traditional to give people food hampers because it is believed that if you have food at this time of year, you will have food all year long. They used to give rice but apparently the rice got to heavy so now they give pringles etc. I think the rice may have been the healthier option. My work gave me a cash bonus and two bottles of french wine. The decorations in the centre of the city were beautiful, fairy lights, lanterns etc, considering the normal tacky exuberance that normal acompanies Vietnamese decorating. There are just people everywhere and you cant really travel within Vietnam as everything is booked out months in advance …
